FAINT WAVES

It is with much gratitude and relief that I finally announce my musical freedom (on Bandcamp). This is not a struggle I have been public about but for over five years now, the capabilities of my Bandcamp page have been limited, as my page had been tethered to a label roster. In my ignorance, I believed it wouldn’t impact my page or how I sell my music independent of that label; I was wrong. I agreed to the linking of my page to theirs in 2021 and the sole release (a single) I did for them back in 2019 was added to my page, seems innocuous enough right? Surely it wouldn’t have any drawbacks; wrong again. Among other admittedly trivial changes, no longer was I able to sell my digital discography on the whole, one of the best features Bandcamp has to offer. I immediately had remorse over my decision and since 2022, have gone to great lengths to reason with the label in question, even going as far as offering to buy my music back at a premium. Alas, it was to no avail, I couldn’t get them to understand where I was coming from or get them to budge at all. Between 2022 and 2023, there were multiple talks and emails and it all went nowhere. Finally, in 2026, I got somewhere.

I had been quiet for three years but it was always in the back of my mind, every time I looked at my Bandcamp and saw that release there. It was a burden, an unnecessary frustration, a five year headache. On a whim, I once again reached out to try and remedy this situation once and for all. At first, I was met with the same resistance I had been met with circa 2023 but after addressing my issue and what I wanted as directly as possible, there was movement. I’ll be the first to admit that I went to great lengths, offering monetary resolution, reaching out to Bandcamp support, even begging and pleading. I don’t think there’s any shame in that. I was simply desperate to be free of something that was an unnecessary burden. Ten people on the planet bought the single and the label it was for, they haven’t released anything in over four years. I mean no disrespect to them and I wish them well; it just made no logistical sense, why this couldn’t be remedied. I can’t even say it’s all their fault, I did agree to the linking/tether to their roster in the first place, that’s on me. However, this is something that really shouldn’t have been so difficult to sort out. It was a needless stress. It was as much a Bandcamp issue, they really should make it less difficult to handle these matters. Artists AND releases should be easily assignable AND unassignable to labels without difficulty, without jumping through endless hoops.

Now it’s over, it’s behind me. I’m free. Finally. I’ve got my page back and all that it’s capable of.
