It’s been a whirlwind since I got back from my very brief vacation. Haven’t had much interest in writing anything but I heard news this week that Pete Byrne of Naked Eyes passed away earlier this month, sadly. Pete was best known as the lead singer of Naked Eyes. In memory of him, this is Song Of The Week: “Emotion In Motion” by Naked Eyes.
I enjoyed Naked Eyes quite a bit, they had a number of good songs outside their terrific cover of “Always Something There To Remind Me”. I’ve been a casual fan since I was a kid but even in the last five years, I did a deep dive of their catalogue; there’s not too much material there and yet there’s a lot to like, particularly the entirety of their debut album and the song, “Eyes Of A Child” on their sophomore effort. Naked Eyes were an exceptional Synthpop, New Wave band, adept at crafting catchy songs with engaging synth melodies. That’s precisely why I chose this gem, the synth riffs regularly get stuck in my head. Many of Naked Eyes’ songs are not only accessible, they’re memorable ear worms.
It would’ve been nice to see Pete’s modern incarnation of the band live but there’s so many acts and so little time, life stands in our way, whether as an obstacle for the fan or for the act itself. I don’t think an opportunity ever came close to presenting itself but even if it had, things have to line up in order for that to come together. Sooner or later, we all run out of time, so all we can do is our best to make things happen while we can. Rest in peace.
