Spring has sprung or at least is in the process of springing. To celebrate, I’ve released a little one-off thing for you, it’s called Blue As Heavens. A mellow, downtempo, jazzy, lounge tune; synths, vibraphone, and nylon guitar. Sort of an evolution of what I was doing on my Cabana Edits series of EP’s for a long time, just a bit more lush, less sparse.

“Blue As Heavens” came about as an extension/sequel to previously released song, “The Deepest Blue”. They’re very similar songs, structurally and melodically. I pitched a mix of The Deepest Blue to Café Del Mar and they were interested, but they don’t license anything that’s already been released in any form anymore, so I came up with Blue As Heavens as a means of bridging the gap; creating something new and exclusive but very much in the spirit of what they were interested in to begin with. Alas, they passed on it. No harm, no foul. It’s just business, it didn’t fit anything they had coming down the line. That said, I really like the tune and am happy to share it with you, I think it’s a nice successor not only to “The Deepest Blue” but to my biggest song, “Bonita”, too.

The song’s title, while obviously thematically connected to its progenitor, is also a Prefab Sprout lyric. Blue As Heavens is a line in the song “Scarlet Nights” by Prefab Sprout, off Jordan: The Comeback. The song doesn’t resemble it or anything, I’m just a big Prefab fan, as many people know. I’ve made allusions to them a couple times in my work. If you look closely at the side of the artwork for this single too, you can actually read an excerpt of lyrics taken from “Scarlet Nights”. It’s a lovely song and while there is zero sonic similarity, I like to think my song does possibly capture some of the feelings talked about in the tune and its lyrics. Blue as skies and blue as heavens. Watching over you. Blue as water, Jordan’s waters. Washing over you. That sort of meditative, ethereal, vaguely spiritual feeling is what I’d hope to capture with this song, musically. Hopefully it got there.

Aside from that, a lot of things are in the air right now, floating, a sort of musical freefall. I’ve definitely felt better from a mental, emotional, and creative standpoint. As you’ll recall, I spoke a few months back on resting and trying to recover after a difficult couple years. I’m happy to say that things have improved. It’s still a work in progress but I’m doing well and am optimistic about the future. I’ve been active here on the site when I can, taking personal time for myself when I can, trying to find light and joy and fun when I can, rejecting the darkness and moral failings of the modern world when I can, and as a result: I’ve been in the creative mode lately on and off and have been working on various things. I do hope to have something more substantial for you later this year, not sure what that will be, but we’ll see. Until then, thank you, and enjoy.

Blue As Heavens is out now on YouTube, Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, and Bandcamp.
