Back in 2020, I released Another Sunset, my homage and tribute to José Padilla; José sadly passed away October 18th, 2020. José is notable for his work with Café Del Mar, effectively putting them on the musical compilation path they’ve been on and remain on today, and for being a “Balearic” pioneer. It’s not a stretch to say that, without José, there wouldn’t be the same place for music like mine (and countless others) that there is.
Five years on, I wanted to revisit Another Sunset for its anniversary, with Another Sunset ’25. It had to matter though, it had to be a worthwhile exercise, so I made new artwork and produced an all-new, all-different take on the titular song (it’s better in every conceivable way in my opinion). In addition to the newly produced “Another Sunset ’25” are the original tune, the cabana edit, and the wonderful James Bright remix (each newly mastered). I originally wanted to add another all-new tune to round out the package but I ran out of steam. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m recovering from burn out and recently abandoned social media altogether in an effort to center myself, focus on the music, and have more meaningful interactions.
As was the case 5 years ago, it’s impossible to encapsulate or truly pay tribute to the entirety of José Padilla with a single release, but I really wanted to reflect and distill a few of the varying elements, sounds, and colors present in José’s own music and his mix selections. There’s a nice blend of Trip-Hop, Lounge, Jazz, and Soft Rock influences present here. The new version of the titular song too, it felt very 90’s once I finished it; it actually put me in mind “Take A Picture” by Filter, which obviously has zero to do with José Padilla, but I have very fond childhood memories of it (the graphic designer for a few of their records has had a huge impact on me too, Deborah Norcross). It was nice to return to this song.
Five years gone, wow.
