I didn’t expect to be writing this or releasing this but my first release of 2025 is out now, and it is an unplanned 5-track (started as 3!) tribute to a trio of legends who are unfortunately no longer with us: David Lynch, Julee Cruise, and Angelo Badalamenti. Julee Cruise and Angelo Badalamenti both sadly passed in 2022, while we just recently (as of this writing) lost David Lynch in January 2025.

If you had asked me what was next for Faint Waves last month, it wouldn’t have been this. It came together very quickly and very naturally. Lynch, Cruise, Badalamenti; these frequent collaborators, musically and cinematically tethered as they were, made brilliant art together. Needless to say too, they were a big influence on me, and I’m grateful for the bodies of work they’ve left behind and to have existed at the same time as them. I could never hope to fill any of their shoes, nor is that my intent with this outing. Rather, I wanted to musically express the impact they’ve had on me.

The Big Dream is a very deliberate homage, particularly indebted to the jazz-tinged dream pop of Julee Cruise’s first two records (which Lynch and Badalamenti were deeply involved in), but also to the music of Twin Peaks, and just a touch of Blue Velvet inspiration. The art (especially the tape release art) is a little more varied, featuring allusions to Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, and Wild At Heart, among others. I had a great time making this release, I’ve wanted to make something like it for years, hopefully it resonates with some of you out there.

The Big Dream is available on Bandcamp as a “name your price” release, also available on limited edition cassette. Half of all proceeds go to MusiCares.
