I started Unlimited Oceans in late 2019 as a side project/alter ego to explore the more electronic and dance inspired side of my musical interests. In 2020 and 2021, I predominately used the UO name to make DnB and Trance inspired music. After that, I turned my focus back to Faint Waves for quite some time.
Now, three years later, Unlimited Oceans returns with True Faith; the most uplifting, club inspired Unlimited Oceans release yet. Rooted closely in 90’s and early 00’s dance, rave, eurobeat, etc. I definitely wanted to capture that spirit, while still grounding it in the sort of hi-fi dream space that UO occupies. That’s kind of where the title comes from, in addition to being named after the New Order song, I think it alludes to the “religious experience” side of this type of music; the emotional, euphoric, otherworldly, transcendental nature of it.
I had a good time making this extended play, I actually prioritized this project over others for the last couple months, because I really wanted to work on something positive and uplifting. Not only wanted to, I’d argue that I needed to. It’s been a strange year and this last half of it has repeatedly kicked my ass. I’ve always had my ups and downs, that’s life, but this has been a special kind of misery. Sorry to speak in such frank terms, but I don’t believe in sugarcoating things really, sometimes things are hard and that’s okay. Some people like to think they can avoid and cut out all the hard parts, that they can run from them, but you can’t. All you can do is go through it. Anything else is nonsense. I found catharsis in making True Faith, it didn’t fix anything, but it was nice to be invigorated and energized by the music. It was a welcome change of pace, literally and figuratively. Music is a powerful thing, whether you’re making it or listening to it. If there was any one thing I wanted to say with this music, it’s this: don’t give up, have faith that it’s going to get better.
